Japanese automaker Mitsubishi is recalling about 19,000 of its 2022 Outlander SUVs – which includes 3,903 in Canada – due to a potential issue with their fuel pump wiring.
Mitsubishi told the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that the affected Outlander SUVs were built with a faulty fuel pump, believed to be the mistake from a parts supplier. The manifold and wires of said fuel pump were not properly fused during the production process, which results in poor continuity.
The automaker said that this can ultimately lead to abnormal wear of the pump components, preventing the part from delivering fuel to the engine. In the most extreme of cases, the engine may suddenly stall or fail to start, which could cause accidents.
The auto manufacturer explained that not all the vehicles subject to the recall have a faulty pump, but it issued a large recall for all the Outlander 2022 model year produced between February 08 and October 12, 2021 as a precaution. It believes that only about 1% of the units being recalled have the faulty fuel pump.
Auto123.com reported that Outlander owners will be notified by mail starting March 2022. They will have to take their vehicles to the nearest service centre to have the fuel pump replaced, at no additional cost.
