The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) announced last March that it would mail rebate cheques to customers to help offset the increases in gas prices – but thanks to new official details, those rebates could take a bit more time to mail out.
Originally announced in March, the rebate totalled more than $395 million for both personal and commercial policyholders. Policyholders with personal use vehicles will each receive $110, while those with commercial vehicles will receive $165. The rebates affect some 3.5 million customers in BC, and the insurer initially said that all customers would receive their cheques in June.
But CTV News has reported that so far, only 24,000 rebates have been issued to customers who had set up direct deposits with ICBC. The insurer also revealed that another 575,000 are expected to be issued as refunds to credit cards "in the coming weeks.”
A statement from the insurer noted that those who pay ICBC using debit, cash, cheque, or payment cards can look forward to their cheques “starting June.” The same email statement from ICBC also told CTV News that the insurer expects to have all the cheques mailed out “by the end of July” – a full month over the original timeline.
ICBC also offered a reminder to customers to be careful of text messages or emails that direct people to click a link to receive their reward – these are scams, the Crown insurer warned, and that it would never issue any rebates via text or email.
