After discussions with its members, the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association (CLHIA) has announced that commercial truckers with group insurance coverage will continue to have coverage for emergency out-of-country medical expenses as they continue to deliver goods between the US-Canada border.

CLHIA made its announcement in response to concerns following the federal government’s recent advisory that prohibited non-essential travel. Some provisions in group and/or workplace insurance plans refer to government travel advisories as either a limitation or exclusion for out-of-country medical coverage.

“With restrictions to non-essential travel beginning in the coming days, Canada’s insurers want to be clear that commercial truckers will not lose their group out-of-country medical coverage due to recent travel restrictions,” said CLHIA president and CEO Stephen Frank. “The commercial trucking industry is providing crucial services to support Canadians with goods at all times, but particularly now.”

CLHIA is highly encouraging employers and employees to review their group insurance plan contracts, and to contact their HR staff or insurer directly if they have any questions.
