The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) government has revealed Ping An Technology as a service provider for the establishment, support, and maintenance of its electronic personal identity (e-ID) system.
In a statement by the Asian insurance giant’s technology arm, it outlined that the e-ID project will allow all Hong Kong residents to conduct online transactions via unique electronic identification, to promote a new economic service model directly to citizens, and to provide key electronic infrastructure for HK’s smart city project.
According to Ericson Chan, CEO of Ping An Technology, the company was able to win the bid for the project by demonstrating the capabilities of its cloud technology and facial recognition software. He added that Ping An’s cloud technology has already gathered 500 million internet users and is one of the most secure financial industry clouds in China. Meanwhile, its facial recognition software has been used in over 200 fields, such as airport security, intelligent community management, financial risk control, medical insurance, social welfare security, and railway facilities. It has been exported to several overseas markets, particularly in Southeast Asia.
“The e-ID project is the framework for building a smart city in Hong Kong,” Chan said. “We hope that the application of technology can benefit more people. Ping An Technology has accumulated core technologies in AI, blockchain, and cloud computing, and has gained rich practical experience in China.”
