Liberty Mutual has announced that its TechSafety program is now available to provide premium discounts to drivers of Volvo cars who use active and passive safety features.

The insurer hopes to encourage the adoption of autonomous safety features among drivers by giving savings incentives on their coverage, as well as evaluating the impact of such technology on improving road safety, through the initiative.

A PR Newswire report said that the Liberty Mutual product builds on Volvo’s City Safety technology, which detects pedestrian, cyclists, and large animals and applies emergency autobrake during instances of potential collision.

According to a 2016 study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the technology reduced rear end crashes by 41% and injuries by 47%. Liberty Mutual will undertake further evaluation of Volvo’s safety features and collaborate with the automaker to further promote road safety.

“We believe vehicles equipped with these types of advanced safety features will not only reduce crashes but help our customers worry less on the road while providing them new ways to save on their auto insurance,” Hamid Mirza, senior vice president of product strategy and solutions at Liberty Mutual, said in the report.

Lex Kerssemakers, president and chief executive of Volvo Car USA, also stated, “We are excited to work with Liberty Mutual and provide additional value to Volvo customers.”
