Allstate is expanding its ride-hailing coverage – which covers customers who drive for transportation network companies (TNCs) like Lyft or Uber – into seven additional states. The company’s “Ride for Hire” coverage, first introduced in 2015, will now be available in Louisiana, Mississippi, North Dakota, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, South Dakota and Vermont. The additions of the seven new states mean the coverage is now available in 43 states.

“We created this coverage in response to our customers’ needs,” said Geoff Williams, Allstate’s auto line vice president. “Ride-hailing is here for the long term, and Allstate is committed to protecting our customers in this rapidly developing market.”

Drivers for TNCs may see a coverage gap between their personal auto policy and the TNC’s coverage, Allstate said. The Ride for Hire endorsement is a way for customers to fill that gap.

“On average, an Allstate customer will pay only about $20 each year to add this optional coverage,” Allstate said. “It is designed to work as excess insurance over what the TNC commercial policy offers, ensuring needed protection without duplication.”
