Insurer responds to city’s coverage gap

A new product has been developed in response to one Canadian city’s need for accessible group coverage

Officials in Halifax have announced a new product on the market that will help its residents obtain group liability insurance for community events, according to CBC News.

The city’s insurance broker, Aon Risk Solutions, is now offering a Citizen Event Insurance Program (CEIP) that provides coverage for such gatherings as ice cream socials, sports leagues, tournaments and such non-profit fundraisers as polar bear swims.

CEIP includes $2 million in commercial general liability, with premiums determined by the size, scope and nature of the activities. The coverage will help to address what municipal representatives call “a need out there,” since many coordinators have had to downsize or cancel events in recent years due to the lack of affordable policies.

Halifax mandates that all events held on municipal grounds and private property, including parks such as Halifax Commons and the Sackville Landing on the Halifax waterfront, acquire insurance. The city’s website says that the coverage even protects against high-risk activities, including alcohol consumption and fireworks.

Community-focused groups and associations are also able to access these policies for such annual activities and programming as operation of wharves and senior clubs.

So far, there has been no specifics released regarding costs, but the city did say that “the more people that participate in the program, the more affordable it becomes.”
