Leopoldo Camara has been appointed head of property & casualty (P&C) reinsurance for Swiss Re’s business in Northern, Central, and Eastern Europe and country president of Germany, effective August 1, pending regulatory approval.

Camara will also retain direct client management responsibilities, serving as Swiss Re’s head - globals for NCEE, according to a company statement. He will be based in Munich.

Meanwhile, Beat Strebel, who has been serving as interim head for property & casualty reinsurance NCEE, will move to Beijing to become Swiss Re’s chief executive officer of reinsurance for China and China country president.

Camara joined Swiss Re in 2005 and has worked in various functions across the organization, including group finance, group risk management, and life/health business management.

In 2016, he joined the globals division, servicing Swiss Re’s largest reinsurance clients as key account manager for German and Spanish clients. Most recently, he held the position of head globals Europe.

Before joining Swiss Re, Camara worked for Gerling-Konzern in Germany, the Mexican insurance regulator, Zurich Insurance, and Converium in Switzerland.

With 19 years of experience at Swiss Re across the organization, Camara was highlighted as a seasoned insurance executive who “brings together the best of both worlds,” according to Urs Baertschi, Swiss Re's CEO property & casualty reinsurance.

Last month, the global reinsurer also announced that Ivan Gonzalez will take over as CEO of Corporate Solutions starting July 1, 2024, succeeding Andreas Berger.

“I am pleased that we were able to appoint such a strong internal successor to lead Corporate Solutions,” CEO Christian Mumenthaler said. “Ivan has deep knowledge of Corporate Solutions, after spending 10 years in leadership roles there and helping to reposition the business from a generalist capacity provider to a specialized risk partner.”
