BMS Re has announced the appointment of John Canavan as its new chief operating officer in the US, effective May 1, 2024.
Canavan brings experience from several notable organizations, including Willis Re, Guy Carpenter, and AIG, where he recently held the position of global COO of reinsurance. His contributions in previous roles include enhancing client and market services, implementing digital strategies, and fortifying financial policies within the reinsurance domain.
In his new role, Canavan will spearhead BMS Re’s operational expansion in the US. This includes enhancing digital and technological capabilities, as well as fostering integration with the company’s London and Bermuda operations.
Canavan will report to Chris Brook, group COO, and Andrew Wheeler, president of BMS Re. He is also set to oversee the company’s operational team, managed by Kris Westall.
Brook commented on Canavan’s appointment, praising him for “over four decades of invaluable experience in the US reinsurance market.”

Canavan joins BMS Re as the company continues its growth trajectory, which has included both organic growth and mergers and acquisitions.
