AXA XL has appointed Matthew Teehan (pictured) to the role of senior underwriter – multinational for middle market in the Americas.

Teehan, based in New York, will report to Christopher Kelly, underwriting manager for US middle market. The role centers around the development and launch of a dedicated multinational property and casualty product tailored specifically for the middle market sector.

Part of the insurer’s expansion into the middle market space, the appointment supports AXA XL’s commitment to serving mid-sized businesses facing the challenges of globalization while leveraging its established international reach.

With over a decade of industry experience, Teehan comes to AXA XL following a tenure as senior international P&C underwriter at Zurich North America. His background also includes almost 10 years at Marsh, where he served as an international P&C broker for mid- and large-sized clients.

Adele Smith, chief underwriting officer, middle market, Americas, noted: “Matt’s robust experience on both the brokerage side and the underwriting side for large complex and middle market multinational programs will help us to strengthen our client-focused approach.”

She added that expanding international exposure and global supply chain dependencies are increasingly driving middle-market businesses to seek comprehensive multinational solutions.

Smith also emphasized: “AXA XL is already a major provider of insurance solutions for complex multinational programs, and adding Matt to our team further extends this capability to our middle market clients.”

Before entering the insurance sector, Teehan served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy with a concentration in International Relations from the State University of New York at Albany.

Recent changes within AXA XL include the launch of a specialized cyber insurance endorsement aimed at bolstering cybersecurity for construction firms across the US.

The new endorsement features missed bid reimbursement, which compensates for income lost if a cyber incident prevents timely bid submission; contingent bodily and property damage, which covers third-party claims; expanded definition to include Building Information Modeling (BIM) and other construction software; downstream contractual penalty coverage; and drone coverage.
