The Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I) has launched a campaign in Baton Rouge to raise awareness about legal system abuse and its impact on Louisiana's economy. The campaign coincides with the start of the state’s 2025 legislative session.

Triple-I’s initiative highlights how legal system abuse, particularly frivolous lawsuits, is contributing to rising insurance premiums. The organization’s spokesperson emphasized the need for legislative action, stating, “As we continue to see the influence of billboard attorneys preying on vulnerable individuals and increasing insurance costs, now is the time for Louisiana’s legislators to take action to address legal system abuse.”

The campaign includes digital billboards located at bus stop shelters and urban panels throughout Downtown Baton Rouge, as well as traditional billboards along I-110 near the State Capitol. A dedicated microsite, StopLegalSystemAbuse.org, has also been launched to encourage consumers to support legal reforms aimed at reducing the financial burden caused by rising insurance premiums.

According to a report from Triple-I, Louisiana ranks among the least affordable states for both home and auto insurance, despite reforms introduced in 2024. “Louisiana, with the leadership of its insurance commissioner, Tim Temple, is on a potential path to stabilizing its insurance market,” said Triple-I CEO Sean Kevelighan. “We’ve seen in other states, like Florida, that legal reform can lead to market stabilization, increased competition, and more favorable pricing for consumers.”

Kevelighan noted that further legislative action is needed in the 2025 session to continue progress. He also pointed to the ongoing issue of billboard attorneys, whose practices are seen as contributing to the increase in frivolous lawsuits that place additional strain on Louisiana's legal system.

The report from Triple-I estimates that legal system abuse is adding an additional $1,011 to the average Louisiana household’s annual expenses due to higher insurance costs.
