Universal Direct, along with its Florida-based homeowners insurance carrier subsidiary Universal Property and Casualty Insurance Company (UPCIC), last month participated in a fundraising event meant to help children with cancer.

The July 14 event, organized by St. Baldrick’s Foundation, saw 16 volunteers and $70,000 in donations for childhood cancer. A release also noted that over 80 employees took part in an activity called “Brave the Shave,” wherein participants were asked to have their heads shaved as a show of solidarity with children undergoing chemotherapy for their cancer.

Universal Direct also announced that it matched the donations the fundraiser collected, bringing the total to $140,000. Proceeds generated from the event went into funding childhood cancer research.

“Kids with cancer are the reason for it all,” the company said in a release. “There is currently a broad range of research being conducted to better understand the causes, biology, and patterns of childhood cancers and to identify the best ways to successfully treat children with cancer, but there is still a long way to go.”

“Even when long-term survival is achieved, many survivors of childhood cancer may experience long-term adverse effects from the disease or its treatment. Clearly, more research is needed to develop new, more-effective, and safer treatments for childhood cancer.”
