Gallagher has appointed Jonathan Eaton as executive director for US cargo.

In his new capacity, Eaton will oversee wholesale operations to other non-specialist brokers and collaborate with Gallagher offices across the US to support cargo client retention and foster new business growth.

The key hire brings more than three decades of industry experience to Gallagher, having previously served as managing director of cargo at Howden since 2020. His career includes time spent at RKH Specialty, XL Catlin, Aviva, and AIG.

Eaton will commence his role at Gallagher in September, reporting to cargo managing director Peter Wilmot.

“I am thrilled to be joining Gallagher and to build on its existing marine capabilities,” Eaton commented. “With Gallagher’s growing portfolio of cargo customers in the US, my experience will be highly relevant, and I’m excited by this opportunity to develop and deliver enhanced technical expertise and value to clients operating in this highly important global trade.”

Wilmot, meanwhile, noted: “Jonathan’s extensive industry experience is a great addition to our expanding team and will play a crucial role in driving our team’s continued growth and success, in particular among our US client base – be that wholesale to other brokers, working with the wider Gallagher network, and to cargo clients direct.

“We have seen strong growth in our client base, and this appointment speaks volumes about our strategy to provide clients with the very best talent in the industry.”

Gallagher’s specialty marine team, based in London and established in 1994, comprises more than 80 risk professionals dedicated to providing tailored risk management solutions for the global maritime and shipping sector. The team boasts extensive experience in placing insurance programs across major marine insurance markets, including London, Scandinavia, Continental Europe, the US, and Singapore.
