A New Jersey doctor is headed to prison for three years for scamming Medicare and private insurers out of $3 million.

Anthony J. Enrico, 60, pleaded guilty to healthcare fraud for billing 150,000 physical therapy sessions that were performed by unqualified personnel.

Enrico, a podiatrist, has offices in Paterson, Passaic and Elizabeth, N.J., according to a report by The Paterson Times. Prosecutors said that between 2007 and 2016, he billed insurers for physical therapy sessions that should not have been covered by insurance.

Medicare and private insurers require that physical therapy be performed only by people with proper training and certifications. But Enrico had staff members who weren’t trained or certified perform the services so he could bill insurers, the Times reported.

In addition to the three-year prison sentence, Enrico must also serve three years of supervised release and pay $3 million in restitution, according to the Times.
