A New York couple has been charged with insurance fraud and other offenses for allegedly stealing the identity of the man’s first wife in order to have a baby.

Mohammed Aziz, 61, and Anna Khaled, 42, allegedly stole the identity of Mohammed’s first wife in order to receive medical care and deliver a baby under her name.

“The victim visited a hospital and was shocked when a doctor asked her about her recent childbirth experiences, when in fact she had not given birth,” Nassau County, N.Y., District Attorney Madeline Singas said. “The allegations of identity theft in this case are particularly troubling because mixing medical records could have led to serious health consequences for the victim.”

According to Singas, the victim visited the emergency room and was asked by the doctor about a medication she was taking. The victim replied that she didn’t take that medication, and the doctor said that according to her medical history, she’d also recently given birth.

“That, too, was untrue,” the DA’s office said.

The victim tracked down the pharmacy that dispensed the mystery medication and reviewed security footage of the woman picking it up. She also went to the hospital and got medical records that were under her name.
That’s when she discovered that someone had used her name and medical insurance to deliver a baby. The records also listed Aziz as the person responsible for the medical bills. The victim, Aziz’s first wife, is in the process of divorcing him.

If convicted, Aziz and Khaled each face up to seven years in prison.
