Mobile phone company T-Mobile has recently issued a statement warning customers of a data breach that occurred last week.
The company’s cyber security team discovered and disabled an unauthorized access to customer information on August 20, and reported the breach incident to the authorities, T-Mobile revealed in a statement on its website.
While T-Mobile assured that no financial data (such as credit card information) or social security numbers were involved with the breach, personal information – including names, billing zip codes, phone numbers, email addresses, account numbers and account types (prepaid or postpaid) – may have been exposed due to the breach.
“We take the security of your information very seriously and have a number of safeguards in place to protect your personal information from unauthorized access. We truly regret that this incident occurred and are so sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you,” T-Mobile’s statement read.
A company spokesperson told Motherboard that the breach potentially affected about 3% of T-Mobile’s 77 million customers – about two million people.
The telecommunications company said that all affected customers have been or shortly will be notified of the breach.
