A storm system that has been hovering over Florida since the past weekend has dumped almost a foot of rain in some areas of the state.
Around eight inches of rain has fallen on Cross City, with nearly five inches coming in within the 24 hour period on Monday. Hatchbend got a little more than 12 inches from Saturday to Monday.
The storm has increased the risk of flooding westward along the central Gulf of Mexico coast until the next weekend.
Repeating rain showers and thunderstorms will pour over Tallahassee, Florida, and Mobile, Alabama, to Biloxi, Mississippi, and New Orleans.
"A general 3-6 inches of rain will fall from the Florida Panhandle to southeastern Louisiana with local amounts potentially topping 8 inches," AccuWeather storm warning meteorologist Alex Avalos said.
These rainfall rates will be high enough to cause flooding in low lying areas, meteorologists added. There will be cases when two inches of rain could fall in as many hours.
Further, the heavy rains will move towards the west on Friday, but will continue to affect parts of Florida and cause more flooding. Flash floods are also expected hundreds of miles to the north.
The Mississippi and Pearl rivers are expected to catch the waters with no trouble.
Ohio Valley will have to catch the rest of the rains during the weekend when the core of the storm moves northward.
