In response to the recent severe weather that wreaked havoc across parts of Illinois, the American Property Casualty Insurance Association (APCIA) has stepped forward to guide residents through the insurance claims and recovery process. They are encouraging those affected by the destruction of their homes, businesses, or vehicles to contact their insurance providers as soon as it is safe to do so.
Brooke Kelley, the assistant vice president of state government relations at APCIA, emphasized the readiness of the insurance industry to support their policyholders. “The industry is poised to assist policyholders by swiftly processing claims and compensating for covered damages,” she said. “Initiating your claim is the crucial first step towards recovery. Moreover, by documenting the damage with photos or videos, policyholders can facilitate a smoother claim process.”
APCIA also addresses frequently asked questions to aid those impacted in initiating their claims and navigating the recovery journey:
What steps should I take if my property is damaged or destroyed?
Is damage from severe storms and tornadoes covered by insurance?
Typically, damages caused by tornadoes and severe storms are covered under standard homeowners, renters, or business insurance policies. Vehicle damage may be covered if your auto policy includes comprehensive insurance.
What should I do if I cannot stay in my home?
Inquire with your insurer whether your policy includes coverage for additional living expenses, advised the APCIA. This can cover costs associated with temporary accommodation, meals, and laundry. Keep all related receipts for discussion with your insurance adjuster.
What are the next steps after reporting a claim?
It's important to prevent any further damage but refrain from making permanent repairs or discarding damaged items before an adjuster’s evaluation. Document any perishable items and retain receipts for emergency repairs and additional living expenses to support your claims.
