Mexico City and the central Mexican state of Puebla were rocked by a magnitude-7.1 earthquake this afternoon. The quake comes barely a week after a magnitude-8.1 earthquake struck off the country’s southern coast and killed at least 61 people.
Mexico City was about 75 miles from the quake’s epicenter, which preliminary reports indicate was near San Juan Raboso.
There were no immediate reports of injuries, according to a CNN report. There were, however, reports of damaged buildings. All public schools in Mexico City and the states of Puebla and Guerrero were closed until further notice.
The Mexico City airport was also closed. “Operations are suspended until every infrastructure is assessed,” the airport’s Twitter account reported.
Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto has called a meeting of the country’s National Emergency Committee to evaluate the situation, CNN reported.
