Zurich Programs has partnered with program administrator Origin Specialty Underwriters to introduce a Workers’ Compensation program for qualifying restaurants and hotels in the small to middle-market segment.
The program, backed by Zurich, combines Origin’s experience in the hospitality sector with Zurich’s financial strength, casualty capacity, and claims service.
Under the agreement, Zurich Programs grants underwriting authority to Origin, which will offer coverage through its distribution channels. The partnership follows nearly two years of discussions and due diligence, beginning with a meeting at the Program Administrators Association’s Target Markets Annual Summit.
Origin, part of Beyond Risk since 2021, provides solutions for niche markets, including hospitality, hotels, and service stations. Led by President Neno Djordjevic, the company specializes in Workers’ Compensation, Property, and Transportation, working exclusively with carriers and reinsurers rated “A-” or better by A.M. Best.
“We’re pleased about onboarding a new program administrator with the depth of experience of Origin,” said Eric Cittadino, Zurich North America’s head of programs.
“Zurich Programs is focused on smart, profitable growth and diversifying our portfolio, carefully selecting opportunities that align with our long-term strategy. Origin proved to be the right fit, thanks to their specialized knowledge, strong distribution network and commitment to maintaining underwriting integrity,” Cittadino added.
Djordjevic said the new program enhances Origin’s offerings in the hospitality and restaurant segment. “To have it backed not just by any carrier but by one with the reputation and credibility of Zurich supports our ambition to be a market leader in segments where we choose to play,” he said. “We strive to offer our insureds, agents and brokers and everyone in the value chain the best possible service and solutions.”
Lena Battraw Peters, Zurich Program sales regional vice president, recalled the initial meeting with Origin at Target Markets, where both organizations found common ground in strategic growth and working with select partners.
Zurich and Origin developed a defined underwriting strategy, excluding fast-food restaurants and identifying preferred states and class selections. Programs Business Manager Patti Heffernan engaged Zurich Claims, Risk Engineering, and Legal teams to refine the approach. Zurich Resilience Solutions also provided guidance on safety requirements in select states, outlining risk engineering standards and workplace safety services.
The Hospitality Workers’ Compensation program launched in late February across 26 states. Both organizations see potential for expanding their collaboration. Since becoming part of Beyond Risk, Origin has broadened its offerings. One of its sibling organizations, BevCap, works with Zurich Group Captives in the middle-market segment.
