Global specialty insurer and reinsurer SiriusPoint has announced the appointment of Anthony Shapella (pictured) as deputy chief underwriting officer.
Shapella will assume the newly created role on September 5, operating from New York. He will report directly to David Govrin, group president and chief underwriting officer, and play a pivotal role in driving underwriting value and growth.
The focus of Shapella’s remit will be key areas like profitability and performance management, optimisation of underwriting capital allocation, disciplined portfolio management, and the implementation of a unified underwriting approach across SiriusPoint’s global operations.
Shapella’s credentials include a decade-long tenure at AIG where he served in various capacities such as global head of portfolio analytics, chief risk officer for financial and liability lines, and risk aggregation analytics director. He also held insurance consulting and reinsurance brokerage positions at Towers Watson.
Commenting on the appointment, Govrin highlighted Shapella’s leadership qualities and deep understanding of the underwriting landscape.
“SiriusPoint is an underwriting-first company, and we have undertaken considerable action over the last two years to refine our underwriting model and culture, align our risk appetite with our global strategy, and effect dramatic improvement in our portfolio,” he said.
“I am delighted that we are creating a culture and building a track record of performance that is drawing the industry’s top talent to us.”
Shapella also conveyed his enthusiasm about joining the (re)insurer and contributing to its growth trajectory.
“There is real momentum building at SiriusPoint for the company to become ‘best in class’ in the markets in which it operates,” said Shapella. “Continued disciplined underwriting is part of the journey to profitability and success, and I am looking forward to joining the company to contribute and collaborate with the team and our stakeholders.”
Shapella is the latest addition to SiriusPoint’s roster. In June, Linda Lin was named chief legal officer and Bronek Masojada was selected as chair of the company’s board of directors.
