Massachusetts Insurance Commissioner Gary D. Anderson (pictured) is set to become the chief executive of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).
Before ascending to the role of Massachusetts Insurance Commissioner in 2017, Anderson’s career in insurance began in 1999 with a regional carrier in the Northwestern US. Holding a Juris Doctor, his extensive background includes serving as a policy adviser and senior counsel in the Massachusetts State Senate President’s office.
In 2014, Anderson joined the Massachusetts Division of Insurance as First Deputy Commissioner. His CEO role begins on May 1, following the conclusion of his obligations in Massachusetts.
NAIC president and Connecticut Insurance Commissioner Andrew Mais expressed satisfaction with Anderson’s appointment, stating: “Selecting the next NAIC CEO has been arduous but rewarding. We were looking for the best fit, and we found it in Gary Anderson.
“Gary’s dedication to our state-based system of insurance regulation and his insurance expertise are top-notch. We look forward to his leadership as we navigate the complexities of regulating the insurance sector and deliver on our mission to protect consumers.”
The NAIC is governed by the chief insurance regulators from the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and five US territories. The insurance standard-setting organization’s legacy spans 153 years.
Sharing his expectations for the post, Anderson reflected on his rewarding journey through public service in Massachusetts under Governors Deval Patrick, Charlie Baker, and Maura Healey.
“Throughout my career in public service, I have been rewarded with valuable experiences, new and lasting connections, and opportunities to contribute to a greater good,” said Anderson, who has chaired the NAIC international insurance relations (G) committee since 2019. “I am excited to embark on the next adventure as CEO of the NAIC, supporting the state-based system of insurance regulation. Thank you to the NAIC members for the trust and faith you have placed in me.”
His contributions to the field were recognized in December 2022 when Anderson received the Raymond G. Farmer Award for Exceptional Leadership by the NAIC. Prior to Anderson’s CEO appointment, NAIC chief operating officer & chief legal officer Andy Beal has served as acting chief executive since March 2023.
