A Massachusetts man has been arrested for insurance fraud in connection with a fire that destroyed his second home in Maine two-and-a-half years ago.
William Carabetta, 49, has been charged with four counts of insurance deception and one count of conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, according to a report by News Center Maine.
Although the cause of the 2017 fire that destroyed Carabetta’s second home was never determined, authorities said that he had purchased the house for $84,000 in 2014 and received $350,000 in insurance proceeds after the fire.
The insurance fraud charges also stem from a claim of water damage to the house and the reported theft of an ATV in 2016, News Center Maine reported.
Carabetta was arrested in Massachusetts and was being held on a fugitive from justice charge, News Center Maine reported. He is expected to be transported to Maine to face the fraud charges once that charge has been resolved.
