A Louisiana fire investigator and his wife have been charged with insurance fraud after allegedly filing a phony claim for hail damage to a car – damage that had occurred before he owned the vehicle.
David and Dana Fuller Hill were accused of filing a fraudulent property damage claim on their 2002 Volvo. The Hills claimed that the car was damaged in a hail storm, according to a report by The News-Star.
Authorities said that the Hills filed a phony claim in an attempt to receive payment for damage that already existed before they purchased the car in February 2017. The couple received $3,358 from GEICO for the damage, The News-Star reported.
However, investigators learned that two hail-damage claims had already been filed on the car by its previous owners, and a later owner said that it had suffered additional hail damage while he owned it.
The car was purchased through an auction in Shreveport, La., in February of 2017. The purchaser said he bought it for the Hills. He also said that the car had extensive hail damage when he purchased it.
David Hill serves as the chief fire investigator with the Monroe, La., fire department, according to The News-Star.
