Insurance professionals excited to be represented in the latest DC Comics adventure will be disappointed to hear a speedbump on the road to production for the freshman comedy.
Ben Queen, series creator of
Powerless for NBC, is leaving the show, it was announced this week.
Based on characters from the DC Comics universe,
Powerless features “exceedingly average employees” at an insurance company in a world full of superheroes and villains. Described as an office comedy, the show stars Vanessa Hudgens, Alan Tudyk and Danny Pudi as they seek to find their own power in a world dominated by underwriting, premiums and loss adjustments.
Queen, known for his work on NBC’s
A to Z, was said to be leaving due to creative differences with the network and with WBTV. He has an overall deal with WBTV and recently appeared at San Diego Comic-Con to support the show, which he described as “its own little subset” of the DC Comics world.
Production on the midseason series, which was slated to begin at the end of August, has been postponed as Warner Bros. Television and NBC search for a new showrunner. The comedy was set to premiere midseason, though without a set date, so Queen’s departure is not expected to impact when it does score a spot on the schedule.
Powerless is the second freshman series to lose its showrunner, following the April departure of Eli Jorne from Fox’s live-action/animated hybrid comedy
Son of Zorn.
