Applied Underwriters has named John Black (pictured) to the role of executive vice president of the company’s newly expanded Applied Specialty Underwriters.
Black will focus on middle market E&S casualty risks as part of his new role as EVP. A company release added that his division has plans to introduce primary and excess property this year. Black will also be based in Applied Specialty’s office in New York following his appointment.
With over 35 years of experience, Black is an accomplished underwriter. He previously served as the chief underwriting officer of CM Vantage Specialty – an E&S insurer which he co-founded. Black has also held a number of other leadership roles at regional, national, and international insurers, such as QBE Insurance, Capitol Insurance Companies, Crum & Forster Insurance, as well as USF&G. He also has a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation.
“We have seen Applied Specialty take off handsomely, as the current market’s appetite for expertise and depth in this sector grows aggressively,” said Applied Underwriters CEO Steve Menzies. “With the naming of John Black and the other professionals at Applied Specialty, we are demonstrating our commitment to leadership in this market sector, for agents and brokers.”
Earlier this month, Applied Underwriters launched a new US-based division of its Applied Financial Lines business unit. The company also tapped Stephen McGill to serve as the division’s president.
