St John’s University’s Maurice R Greenberg School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science, part of The Peter J Tobin College of Business, will honor M. Steven DeCarlo, executive chair of Amwins, as the 2024 Insurance Leader of the Year at its 29th Annual Insurance Leader of the Year Award Dinner.
DeCarlo, who has served as executive chair of Amwins Group, Inc, previously held the role of chief executive officer for 17 years, where he oversaw the company’s expansion through the merger of several specialty wholesalers.
He has been on the Amwins board of directors since joining the company in December 2000.
DeCarlo started his career at Crum & Forster before moving to The London Agency, now part of Chubb, as chief financial officer. He later became a founding partner of Royal Specialty Underwriting, where he served as executive vice president and CFO.
He eventually became senior vice president at Royal & SunAlliance USA, RSUI’s parent company at the time.
In 2009, DeCarlo received Ernst & Young LLC’s Entrepreneur of the Year award for the financial services category in the Carolinas.
He has been active in the insurance industry and was recognized by the National Insurance Industry Council’s Spirit of Life event, raising over $2.7 million for City of Hope to fund research for life-threatening diseases, according to St. John’s University.
The event will be held on Feb 26, 2025, at the New York Marriott Marquis in New York, with proceeds benefiting students and programs at the Greenberg School.
This honor is just the latest in a string for Amwins this year. In March, executive vice president and branch leader Andrea Dickinson was named one of Insurance Business’ Elite Women for 2024.
In the same month, Amwins was also selected as one of the top wholesale insurance brokers and MGAs in the US.
