AM Specialty Insurance Company (ASIC) has announced the appointment of Joseph M. Scheerer as a non-executive director on its board. Scheerer, who is the CEO and principal of Stonybrook Capital, brings more than 20 years of experience in insurance, reinsurance, and capital markets.
According to a news release, Scheerer established Stonybrook Capital in 2012, a firm recognized for its reinsurance brokerage and advisory expertise with a focus on innovative investments, including insurtech and partnerships with Lloyd’s of London. Under Scheerer’s leadership, Stonybrook has expanded through strategic alliances with Holborn Corporation and other family offices, growing its footprint in reinsurance and advisory services.
Scheerer’s experience also includes significant roles at Willis Capital Markets & Advisory, where he led specialty practices, and at Benfield Advisory Group.
Shevawn Barder, CEO of AM Specialty, expressed enthusiasm for the appointment. “We are thrilled to welcome Joseph Scheerer to our board,” Barder stated. “His deep expertise, broad relationships, and strategic insight will be instrumental in guiding ASIC’s development as we continue to expand in today’s dynamic insurance landscape.”
Scheerer also shared his excitement for joining the board, commenting, “I could not be more flattered and honored to join such a dynamic and accomplished team. Shevawn and her team have ‘done it before,’ and I am excited to play a role in helping them build another fantastic business.”
The recent appointment is the latest in a series for ASIC announced this year. In the first half of 2024, the company announced three key hires: Dominick Tassone Jr. as chief underwriting officer, Anne Hoffmans as senior vice president of program underwriting, and Renee Montgomery as chief financial officer. In July, ASIC announced the appointment of Peter B. Smith as non-executive director.
ASIC, an AM Best A- Rated domestic excess and surplus insurance company, supports risk-sharing and reinsurance capacity through partnerships with program administrators, brokers, and underwriters.
