Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance has expanded its management team in Milan with the appointment of Francesco Longobardo as head of casualty in Italy.

The move marks the company’s entry into the casualty insurance market in the country.

“We are excited to continue our expansion, with Francesco leading our entrance into the casualty market in Italy,” said Leonardo Castrichino, country manager, Italy, BHSI. “He will also continue to build out the team that will bring our financially strong casualty capacity and CLAIMS IS OUR PRODUCT advantage to customers and brokers in Italy.”

Longobardo brings over two decades of experience in the insurance industry. He previously spent 17 years in senior liability underwriting roles at a global insurer and has prior experience in insurance brokerage.

In his new position, Longobardo will oversee underwriting for primary and excess casualty insurance across various industry sectors. His leadership is expected to influence pricing strategies and underwriting decisions, which could have implications for insurance rates in the Italian market.

BHSI’s expansion in Italy comes amid broader shifts in the casualty insurance sector, where underwriting capacity and claims management play a key role in determining premium levels it as a significant player in the market.

In Italy, BHSI operates under Berkshire Hathaway European Insurance DAC (BHEI), an Irish-domiciled entity affiliated with Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Company (BHSIC) in the United States. The company provides a range of commercial insurance products.

BHSI has a global presence, with offices in key markets across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Last year, Fiona Merton was appointed as customer and broker engagement head for the UK, succeeding Mark Walker in the position. Walker was named UK national business head in 2023.
