Global specialty re/insurer Chaucer Group has appointed Jordan Ray (pictured above) as head of renewable energy and energy transition. The move is effective immediately. Ray will be based in London and report to Simon Schnorr, head of marine and energy.
In her new role, Ray will oversee the underwriting strategy for Chaucer’s renewables portfolio and manage the associated team. She will also work within the broader energy division to develop strategic initiatives and implement cross-class solutions aimed at supporting clients’ energy transition efforts.
Ray joins Chaucer from The Fidelis Partnership, where she led the renewable energy division for four years. Before that, she served as a property treaty underwriter at Agora Syndicate 3268 for five years. She began her underwriting career at Tamesis DUAL in a similar capacity.
Her background spans treaty and facultative business, giving her a perspective on portfolio structuring and risk selection.
Ray’s appointment follows Chaucer’s ongoing expansion in the renewable sector, including the establishment of a renewable power team in 2022. The team, originally led by Lyndsey Picton, was set up to underwrite both onshore and offshore renewable energy risks.
Chaucer has also made sustainability a formal part of its business strategy. The group has pledged to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 or earlier and has integrated ESG principles into its underwriting framework.
Measures implemented include the use of 100% renewable energy in its London headquarters and the development of risk solutions aligned with environmental impact goals.
Ray's appointment also comes at a time when the renewable energy insurance sector is facing increased volatility. Industry reports have noted that premiums in this space have risen by 20%-40% over the past year, largely due to a rise in claims from extreme weather events and natural catastrophes.
Nonetheless, the segment continues to grow, driven by government incentives, corporate sustainability targets, and investor pressure.
According to Schnorr, Ray’s role will focus on maintaining Chaucer’s market presence and supporting the development of client-facing energy solutions.
“Her strong ambition and impressive drive will be instrumental as we expand our portfolio and deliver outstanding renewable and energy transition solutions to our clients. I’m excited to welcome her to the team,” Schnorr said.
