James Vickers (pictured above), chairman of Gallagher Re International, will retire from the firm on May 31 after a 47-year career in the global reinsurance industry.
Vickers has held leadership roles in the reinsurance sector for decades, most recently overseeing Gallagher Re’s international operations. Over the past 25 years, he has contributed to expanding a network of local offices across more than 30 countries.
Reflecting on his career, Vickers noted his continued optimism for the reinsurance broking industry, adding that if he had any regret about retiring, it would be not being 20 years younger to witness the industry's future developments.
Vickers' career spans several leadership roles in major reinsurance firms. Before joining Gallagher Re in December 2021, he held executive positions at Willis Re, including chairman roles in various international markets such as Japan, South Africa, and France.
He has also been involved in industry organizations, serving as chairman of the Insurance Hall of Fame Honors Committee at the International Insurance Society from 2016 to 2022.
Vickers studied geology at Exeter College, Oxford University, and attended Eton College. Following his retirement from Gallagher Re, he will continue in his role as chair-elect of the board of governors at Finton House School, which he began in February.
Gallagher Re International has not revealed plans for who will succeed Vickers following his retirement. At the time of writing, the board’s deputy chairman is Mark Morley, who was previously head of APAC for Gallagher Re International. Morley was promoted to the role in July 2024.
The reinsurance broker also recently appointed Kesavchandran Nair as director of special risks and crisis management, based in its Dubai office. In this role, Nair will lead initiatives in specialty risk areas, supporting the company’s regional expansion.
Earlier this month, Gallagher Re also announced the appointment of Julie Gigleux as a senior reinsurance broker within its Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) team.
