Flood Re has launched an online e-learning platform aimed at enhancing industry understanding of its flood insurance scheme and the Build Back Better (BBB) initiative. The Flood Re Academy, unveiled at the Association of British Insurers (ABI) headquarters, provides free training modules for insurance professionals involved in flood risk management.

According to a news release, the academy includes five dedicated modules covering the origins and purpose of Flood Re, eligibility criteria, the BBB initiative, the role of outdoor spaces in flood mitigation, and the evolution of the scheme. The Chartered Insurance Institute is currently assessing these modules for accreditation.

Kelly Ostler-Coyle, head of communications and stakeholder relations at Flood Re, emphasized the academy’s role in empowering industry professionals to communicate the benefits of flood resilience to homeowners. “Driving forward industry understanding will translate into improved consumer insight and the wider take-up of PFR measures to the benefit of both householders and the insurance market,” she said.

The initiative builds on Flood Re’s existing outreach programs, including lunch-and-learn sessions that have educated over 1,100 insurance personnel on flood resilience. However, Flood Re sees a need for broader industry engagement, particularly as the UK transitions back to risk-based pricing in 2039.

Louise Clark, manager for general insurance policy at the ABI, highlighted the urgency of flood resilience education. “With extreme weather events becoming more common across the UK, it’s never been more important to raise awareness of prevention and resilience measures,” she said. “Equipping insurers with this vital knowledge will ultimately help to support more flood-affected homeowners to embrace the Build Back Better scheme.”

The news release noted that the Flood Re Academy is part of the organization’s long-term strategy to prepare the market for its planned exit in 2039.
