BMS Re expands its London reinsurance team with the appointments of Jonathan Hughes and Martin Bartell to its non-marine insurance division.
The firm has appointed Hughes as managing director of non-marine reinsurance, leveraging his 30-year industry career including positions at Guy Carpenter, Axis and Aon, where he most recently led retro broking operations.
Bartell has been appointed director in non-marine reinsurance. He brings nearly four decades of market experience, dating back to 1986 at Alexander Howden, followed by positions at Benfield, Gallagher Re and Aon, with specialized expertise in UK specialty and retro placements developed over the past 10 years.
Hughes and Bartell will report to Hannah Watkins, chief growth officer.
The appointments align with BMS Re's reinsurance growth strategy defined following Brad Melvin's arrival as BMS Re US CEO.
The appointments bolster BMS Re's London reinsurance team, with both executives taking on responsibilities beyond the UK to include Bermuda operations and coordination with international divisions.
They join shortly after the recruitment of group chief broking officer Richard Dudley, who arrived from Aon where he had led climate strategy globally and managed London's commercial risk wholesale and specialty broking operations.
"We are pleased to welcome two new exceptional team members," said Watkins. "Based in London but with a global mindset and approach, their combined expertise and proven track record make them great additions to BMS Re."
Developing the London reinsurance platform represents a key component of BMS Re's global strategy to give its clients access to independent services across the board.
"In close collaboration with our teams in the US, London and Bermuda, Jonathan and Martin will help us deliver creative and strategic solutions for our clients, reflecting our investment in and commitment to the reinsurance sector,” Watkins said.
