Cayman Islands-based reinsurer Bay Harbor Re announced that José Olivares (pictured) will join the company as Senior Treaty Underwriter, effective June 30.
Olivares brings more than 15 years of experience in insurance and reinsurance, having previously held senior positions at Everest Re, Swiss Re, and MS Re.
His experience spans both US and Latin American markets, where he has worked with a broad range of clients, including global and national insurers, regional carriers, hybrid program carriers, and managing general agents (MGAs).
He holds a bachelor of science in mathematics from Florida International University and has earned the Associate in Reinsurance designation.
In its announcement on LinkedIn, Bay Harbor Re said that Olivares’ technical knowledge and industry relationships are expected to support the company’s growth through the development of tailored reinsurance solutions and the identification of new business opportunities through its Cayman base.
The appointment comes as Cayman nears its “qualified jurisdiction” status from the US National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), a status that will bolster its reputation as a global reinsurance hub.
Bay Harbor Re launched operations in April 2023. The firm, founded by Keith Plummer, a former director at AF Group, maintains offices in Florida and focuses on reinsurance offerings for the US property and casualty sector.
The company has made several key leadership appointments since its inception. In its launch month, Chris O’Connor was named chief operations officer and chief financial officer. O’Connor previously served as area senior vice president at Arthur J. Gallagher and brings over three decades of industry experience.
In August last year, Bay Harbor Re appointed Mark LaManna as senior vice president of casualty underwriting. LaManna has 35 years of experience across casualty underwriting, program management, and treaty reinsurance, and previously served as vice president and casualty team leader for North America at QBE Re.
A few months ago, Steven Green also joined the company as vice president of performance management & accounting. Green came to Bay Harbor Re from Emergent Holdings, where he spent eight years in roles focused on financial performance and analysis.
