HDI Global SE has appointed Dr Carsten Schulte (pictured above) as its new global head of marine, effective Jan. 1.

Schulte will succeed Alexander Schlei, who will take over as head of technical and strategic services. Both executives will report directly to Dirk Höring, a member of the executive board of HDI Global overseeing property, energy, engineering, marine, and HDI Risk Consulting.

Schulte, who led the creation and development of the Technical & Strategic Services division over the past two years, brings extensive experience in underwriting and portfolio management.

During his tenure, he enhanced underwriting excellence and established a hub for expertise sharing and collaboration across HDI Global’s divisions. He also played a key role in shaping the company’s portfolio steering approach.

Schlei, with more than 20 years of experience in corporate insurance, previously managed the NatCat division within technical & strategic services. In that role, Schlei contributed to advancing HDI Global’s capabilities in managing natural hazard risks.

Höring welcomed the changes, noting the contributions of both executives. “Alexander has demonstrated his ability to design and implement board-level strategies effectively, making him an ideal choice to lead the Technical & Strategic Services division.

“Carsten, having established this division, is well-positioned to take on the Marine division, where his expertise in portfolio management and strategic implementation will strengthen our underwriting capabilities,” he said.

Schulte also expressed his enthusiasm for the new role, stating his pride in the achievements of the technical and strategic services team and his eagerness to lead the marine division.

“I am excitedly looking forward to my future work in the marine community, the further development of the division strategy and a continuation of the successful growth of business, especially outside Europe,” Schulte said.

The firm’s marine division oversees global underwriting operations for marine risks, offering comprehensive cargo and marine coverages to corporate and commercial clients worldwide. The division collaborates with HDI Risk Consulting and claims teams to deliver tailored solutions.

The Technical & Strategic Services division, on the other hand, supports global underwriting in short tail lines by providing analytical tools, processes, and portfolio management strategies. Its functions include natural hazard assessments, pricing development, and the implementation of underwriting value chain improvements.
