The past three years have seen a 16% increase in fire claims between summer and winter months, as well as a nearly 20% increase in the cost, according to a report from insurer State.
As winter is well underway in Aotearoa, State urged the public to be vigilant for house fires, which become quite common as the weather grows colder. Fires in the kitchen are the leading cause of home blazes, followed by fireplace fires, carpet fires, garage fires, and finally heating fires. Fireplace-related fire claims increase by 80% in winter, alongside a 70% increase in fire claims from heating sources such as heaters and electric blankets.
State also reminded the public to dispose of ashes from fireplaces safely and to have a fireguard when it is lit. Heaters should also be in good condition, have at least a meter of clear space around them while in use, and should not be used to dry clothing. The insurer also noted that only 3% of all house fire claims that State received involved a fire extinguisher, but these on average caused claims nearly $50,000 less than those without.
“As the temperatures drop, and New Zealanders start using their heating appliances and open fires more frequently, we see a concerning increase in house fires. Winter brings a unique set of fire dangers, and we want New Zealanders to be aware of some of the potential risks and the safety precautions you can take to avoid them,” State executive general manager for claims Wayne Tippet (pictured) said.
“While insurance is there to cover you for the loss or damage of your home or possessions in the event of a fire, we can’t replace customer’s sentimental items that can often mean the most,” Tippet said. “The first priority is always making sure to keep you and everyone in your home safe. In the case of a fire, you should get out of the house and call 111. It’s also important to look at how you can reduce the fire risk in your home to help keep everyone safe.”
State’s parent company, IAG, recently revealed plans to axe over 50 jobs from four divisions as part of simplifying the operations of the group.
