Aon plc has announced its partnership with the Australian Research Council’s (ARC) Centre of Excellence for the Weather of the 21st Century (21st Century Weather) to support climate and weather research in the Indo-Pacific.

The centre, based at Monash University in Australia, brings together over 20 academic and industry institutions, aiming to deepen insights into regional climate-related weather impacts through advanced scientific models and data analysis.

The ARC Centre of Excellence for the Weather of the 21st Century focuses on how climate change affects regional weather, employing high-resolution climate models to project evolving patterns of extreme weather.

Aon’s collaboration is part of its broader commitment to climate risk management and resilience, with the company actively seeking ways to enhance catastrophe risk modelling and climate analytics.

According to Dr Tom Mortlock, head of APAC climate analytics at Aon, the company views this partnership as a valuable opportunity to integrate research into practical insights for its clients.

“This new Centre of Excellence will be a key focal point for climate science in the Indo-Pacific region until 2030. Through close association with this new centre, we will continue translating cutting-edge research into actionable insights for our clients. We are also looking forward to supporting researchers in 21st Century Weather to advance our understanding of high-impact weather events so we can make better risk decisions as the climate changes,” he said.

Aligning industry and academic expertise

Professor Christian Jakob, director of the research centre, highlighted the value of linking academic and industry expertise.

“Connecting our research with real-world applications by working with industry is critical for the success of 21st Century Weather and provides great opportunities to bring together scientists and practitioners. We are looking forward to working with Aon and applying our weather change discoveries to better describe the future of weather-related risk to many sectors of society,” he said.

Operating over a seven-year period, the ARC centre aims to support decision-making for sectors affected by climate-induced weather changes, collaborating with international experts to deliver actionable insights for industry and policy stakeholders.
