Aotearoa insurer Suncorp New Zealand has announced the appointment of Lindsay Tanner as an independent director of the firm’s three boards, including Vero New Zealand Insurance Limited, Vero Liability Insurance Limited, and Asteron Life Limited.
“Lindsay brings a wealth of financial services experience to our New Zealand boards having been a director at Suncorp Group in Australia since January 2018. He is also currently chairman of the Customer Committee and a member of the Risk Committee,” Suncorp NZ board chair David Flacks said.
Tanner has worked at the highest levels of government and business in Australia for over 35 years, including as minister of Finance and Deregulation from 2007 to 2010. In this role, he played a significant role in regulatory reform within the financial services sector.
Tanner also served as minister for the Future Fund during the Global Financial Crisis. He also held the post of chairman of Certane Group Pty Ltd and non-executive director of Covata Limited and Lifebroker, the life insurance broking company. He got his start as a lawyer representing consumers in disputed personal injury and motor insurance claims.
Tanner’s appointment follows the resignation of non-executive director Doug McTaggart, who served on the boards of New Zealand Insurance Limited, Vero Liability Insurance Limited, and Asteron Life Limited until March 13. Flacks wished McTaggart all the best in his future endeavours, and said that the firm would “miss the insight offered by Doug and his considerable contributions.”
Suncorp NZ recently pledged $200K to the Prime Minister’s Cyclone Gabrielle Appeal Fund to support the ongoing recovery efforts in various communities across the North Island of the country following the disaster caused by Cyclone Gabrielle.
