New Zealand’s largest fun run, the Southern Cross Round the Bays, is expanding to Christchurch in 2025, marking the first time the event will be held in three cities across the country.

With Christchurch now joining Auckland and Wellington, the event creates a national series that will bring participants together in both the North and South Islands.

The 2025 series will begin in Christchurch on Feb. 2, followed by Wellington on Feb. 16, and conclude in Auckland on March 2. Each city will offer an 8.4km course along the waterfront, with Wellington adding a 21.1km half-marathon option. Participants can run, jog, walk, or roll along the routes, making the event accessible to people of all fitness levels.

“I’m so thrilled we can bring this iconic event to Christchurch. People of all ages and fitness stages will love taking in the sights and entertainment along the course that will run from the Christchurch Estuary to the Pier,” Stuff Events director Henry McLernon said.

“Next year is going to be huge for Stuff Events. The Southern Cross Round the Bays series will deliver even more memorable experiences for participants while supporting business and raising money for charity.”

The event also serves as a significant fundraiser for charities. In 2025, the official charity partner will be Make-A-Wish NZ, which supports children with critical illnesses. The charity will receive $25,000 and a $40,000 media package from Stuff to help promote its cause.

“There are over 300 very sick Kiwi children who are waiting for their wishes to come true right now,” Make-A-Wish NZ board chair Struan Abernethy said.

But for Southern Cross Healthcare CEO Chris White, the event partnership is first and foremost about health and wellbeing.

“Southern Cross’ vision is to enable healthier years for more New Zealanders, which is why it’s a natural fit for us to support Round the Bays in Auckland, Wellington, and now Christchurch,” White said.
