The Insurance Council of New Zealand (ICNZ) – Te Kāhui Inihua o Aotearoa, in partnership with the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (ANZIIF), has named Toby Kelly, product proposition manager at AA Insurance, as the recipient of the 2023 ICNZ and ANZIIF Scholarship.
Toby Kelly will receive a grant of $10,000, enabling him to participate in an international conference or seminar program. This opportunity is expected to contribute significantly to his professional development in the insurance industry or in leadership skills.
Kelly's winning submission for the scholarship focused on the impact of generative artificial intelligence technologies, such as ChatGPT, on the general insurance sector and its value chain. His essay explored the potential applications of AI in creating text, auditory, and visual content, based on prompts and existing data.
“We are delighted to announce Toby Kelly as this year’s ICNZ winner,” said Tim Grafton, ICNZ chief executive. “Toby's essay demonstrated original thinking and a comprehensive analysis of the opportunities and obstacles associated with leveraging AI to optimise industry practices. ICNZ and ANZIIF will continue to promote this scholarship and provide career development opportunities to the New Zealand insurance industry.”
Prue Willsford, ANZIIF's outgoing chief executive officer and a member of the judging panel, also praised Kelly for his comprehensive understanding and the depth of research evident in his submission.
“Previous winners have described the opportunity to attend an international conference or seminar as career changing, and we are proud to help Toby further his professional career development,” Willsford said. “Thank you to everyone who submitted, I strongly encourage anyone thinking about submitting for 2024 to have a go.”
The ICNZ and ANZIIF Scholarship is an annual initiative designed to acknowledge and support insurance professionals with the potential to become industry leaders. The scholarship aims to provide recipients with experiences that significantly contribute to their professional growth and development within the insurance sector.
