NZI will host a Retail Loss Reduction Expo on Thursday, May 23, at the Distinction Hotel in Hamilton to connect retailers with security and safety experts.
Running from 7am to 7pm, the expo will feature a variety of exhibitors from the safety and security sectors.
Garry Taylor (pictured), executive general manager at NZI, said the extended hours are meant to accommodate busy retailers who may find it difficult to leave their businesses during standard hours.
“We hope the all-day hours will accommodate busy retailers who often find it challenging to leave their businesses,” he said.
The event takes place against a backdrop of high commercial crime rates in New Zealand.
Crime reached unprecedented levels in 2022 and remained high throughout 2023. Data shows that 85% of NZI’s commercial crime claims are due to burglaries and theft, with 42% of those claims from retailers involving ram raids.
“The Waikato has the second highest rate of commercial crime claims, after Auckland. It’s also concerning that nearly 15% of Waikato commercial businesses were the victims of crime five or more times in the last two years,” Taylor said. “Engaging retail businesses with the most effective safety and security solutions has never been more crucial. The event is also an opportunity for retailers to get information on how to access assistance and funding, as crime can be incredibly disruptive for businesses.”
Data is from closed claims between January 1, 2022, and April 30, 2024, across IAG commercial property lines.
Throughout the expo, educational sessions will be led by NZI’s cyber security experts and electrical inspectors.
There will also be fog cannon demonstrations by Fog Cannons NZ Ltd, and advice on physical security, bollards, and fire and flood protection. Seventeen exhibitors will be present, including the NZI team.
Matt Tierney, national retail investigation support unit manager from New Zealand Police, will lead discussions on retail crime prevention and share insights with attendees.
“There will be plenty going on throughout the day, so I would encourage all retail businesses in the area to stop in, grab a drink and bite to eat, and have a chat. Attendees will also go in the draw to win $1,000 to spend with the exhibitor of their choice,” Taylor said.
NZI recently celebrated 165 years as business insurer in New Zealand.
