An Auckland-based car cleaning company has urged new parents to check with their car insurers for possible coverage for birth-related incidents.
ASG Limited, which operates The Car Cleaning Company, has revealed that giving birth in the car is actually more common than people think.
“We find we get at least one call a month. It’s usually the husband trying to sort it out while mum’s still in birth care,” Sani Sanileva, chief executive officer of ASG Limited, told Stuff.co.nz.
“It may be a few weeks after they’ve given birth and they’ll notice the smell and everything. Then they realise, oh, maybe it’s a bit more than just spraying and wiping and trying to shampoo it ourselves.”
Sanileva said they usually charge around $1,200 for the cleaning service, which is usually covered by car insurance.
Charlotte Aronsen, manager for claims practice and customer assurance at IAG New Zealand, confirmed that they cover such a scenario as it is under their motor policies’ unexpected and unintended events coverage.
“Our normal process is to assess the vehicle and determine the best way to get the car cleaned and road-ready for the new parents,” Aronsen said.
Meanwhile, AA Insurance said its customers were covered for any birth-related “moments” not only in their cars but also in their homes.
