Two new safe speed cameras will start operating this week in the Waitemata and Central Police District in an effort to ensure safe speeds and reduce deaths and injuries on New Zealand roads, while also having the potential to drive down insurance claims.

According to the New Zealand Police, one safe speed camera will be installed on SH 17 in Albany Heights and another on SH 3 in Mokoia. Currently, there are seven cameras in the Waitemata Police District and two in the Central District.

“Road crashes have devastating impacts on families and communities,” Inspector Peter McKennie, operations manager - road policing, said.

Both locations are among 33 sites across the country where digital cameras are being installed. The 33 have all been identified as having a high crash-risk based on detailed analysis by independent traffic experts on fatal and injury crashes in the area.

“We know from international experience that safe speed cameras have an impact on slowing people down, and that’s what we want,” McKennie said. “This is why we’re placing safe speed cameras at this and other sites, to encourage people to reduce their speed, which in turn helps reduce deaths and injuries on our roads.”

The New Zealand Police is encouraging drivers to protect themselves and their families by driving to the conditions and within the speed limit, driving sober and alert, and making sure everyone in the car wears a safety belt.

“All road users have a part to play in keeping our roads safe,” McKennie added. “Let’s work together and make sure everybody gets where they’re going safely.”
