Travellers to Ecuador are urged to check their insurance coverage as the New Zealand government has warned of flight delays and cancellations to the South American nation.
A major protest broke out in Ecuador’s capital Quito earlier this week following new economic measures announced by the government. This has caused nationwide disruption, with demonstrations and road blockages in many provinces. Additionally, the country remains in a state of emergency.
Consequently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) said that some international flights have been affected in recent days – and intermittent access to Quito International Airport has resulted in cancellations and delays to domestic and international flights.
“Given the extensive disruption to travel across Ecuador since 03 October, and the likelihood that this may continue, travellers should consider carefully the practicalities of their travel plans,” said MFAT on its SafeTravel website. “Allow extra time to reach your destination and check travel plans regularly – you may need to change your plans.”
