Rotorua residents are being urged to contact their insurers to check if their insurance is up to date and what they are insured against.
The advice follows on from widespread flooding that ripped through homes in Rotorua in April. The severe weather event saw a total of 94 households displaced as a result of serious flood damage to their homes.
In an article by NZ Herald, Rotorua Civil Defence co-ordinator Linda Johnston called on residents to take time to prepare for future emergency events.
“Get to know your neighbours and ensure you have discussed household arrangements if an emergency occurs,” she said. “Have a supply of water and food for three to seven days. Sign up to warnings/ alerts through BOP CDEM text alerting.”
Five months on from the devastating events, meanwhile, repairs to some flood-affected Rotorua properties are now complete but infrastructure repairs are still ongoing in the district.
Johnston reportedly said about 10 families are due to return home in October with more expecting to move back into their houses in November and December. Other households, however, are still struggling with the extra costs incurred in the recovery process - and applications are still being made to the Mayoral Manaakitanga Relief Fund.
