The Earthquake Commission (EQC) is urging Kiwis to look after themselves and their homes following yesterday’s earthquake event.
The earthquake was widely felt, but these types of deep quakes in the centre of the North Island often produce very little shaking near the epicentre, according to EQC general manager resilience Hugh Cowan.
“This means that, fortunately, they do not tend to do much damage at the surface,” Cowan said. “They are a reminder, however, that New Zealand is a geologically active country and we need to take steps to make our homes safer in earthquakes.”
He noted Kiwis can perform practical measures like taking down old brick or concrete chimneys, checking and securing house foundations and securing tall and heavy furniture.
EQC deputy chief executive Canterbury and Renée Walker, meanwhile, reminded homeowners, whose homes had suffered damages, that they have three months to lodge a claim.
“Our thoughts are with all New Zealanders following the 6.2 magnitude earthquake today,” EQC said. “Our first priority is your safety and the safety of your family.”
