In its 25th year, Risk Management NZ (RiskNZ) continues to focus on educating the public about the benefits of risk management, particularly in difficult times. RiskNZ does this by conducting research as well as through thought leadership and networking events. The organisation’s managing director, David Turner, says RiskNZ is building partnerships with government organisations and private consultancies to ensure that more organisations can understand risk issues, and can apply mitigation principles and strategies in an uncomplicated manner.
“I think that’s really what the demand is now and [what] the expectation [is] going forward so everyone can do it,” he said.
He believes that the benefits of risk management expand when a greater number of individuals and organisations can take action on relevant issues.
“[It’s about] empowering everyone to become a risk manager and [encouraging them to not] get caught in silos or one way of thinking,” he said. “For example, we’re going a lot into risk and opportunities, so we’re looking at creative ways of thinking about risk [and] coming up with solutions. [It] all comes down to people communication and just talking, really, that’s the biggest thing we can do.”
Turner emphasises the importance of people’s wellbeing and making risk management a habit in organisations. He cites the need for a broader perspective that considers legal and insurance risks and assessing them accurately.
