Delta Insurance New Zealand has appointed Adrian Sweeney (pictured above) as underwriting manager of its liability and speciality lines insurance business.

Born in the UK, Sweeney has close to four decades’ experience in the global insurance business. He joins Delta after a period as an independent consultant on commercial insurance transformation and a short stint with AXA UK.

Prior to that, he was chief underwriting officer – UK and international for RSA Insurance. He previously spent 25 years with Zurich Insurance, where he last held the role of global chief underwriting officer for commercial business.

Sweeney leads a 15-member team. He succeeded and reports to Dinesh Murali, who was appointed CEO and managing director of Delta Insurance NZ in April.

According to Murali, Sweeney’s appointment comes at a time when the liability insurance market is dramatically evolving amid rapid technological development, increasing litigation, pandemic threats, stricter ESG requirements, and heightened cyber risks.

“Adrian brings a wealth of leadership and underwriting experience across many countries as well as strong skills in transformation and new product development,” Murali said. “He will be leading our strategy for the profitable growth of our liability and specialty lines product portfolio – which Delta sees as a critical strategic focus, not just for our New Zealand operations but also our growing presence in the Asia-Pacific region.”
