The Thames Coromandel District Council has advised residents to plan ahead for the potential severe weather from March 12-13 as Cyclone Hola heads towards New Zealand from the tropics.

Although it is still unknown as to what track it will take, the third possible cyclone for 2018 brings strong winds and heavy rain, which could cause flooding in low-lying areas, slips and downed trees and power lines, the council said.

Moreover, high tides for the period are relatively low, especially compared to the king tides of early January.

The council is asking residents to avoid panicking and instead review their emergency preparedness plans.

The council also outlined things people should have should they lose power or be isolated by slips: These include:

  • Torches and fresh batteries
  • Ample drinking water and emergency food supplies
  • An alternative means of cooking if power is cut
  • If your property is in a low-lying area, check if you need to move items to higher ground.
  • Put away loose items and tie down trampolines or anything else that could be blown around by strong winds.

“It’s also important to stay informed before, during and after emergencies. The more avenues of communication available to you, the better,” it added.
