ACT New Zealand wants the government to be open and disclose the costs of the proposed Zero Carbon Bill.
“The Minister must come clean on what hardworking New Zealanders are likely to pay and what exactly this will mean for the climate,” ACT NZ leader David Seymour said.
In June, Climate Change Minister James Shaw launched the Zero Carbon Bill, which is intended to provide a long-term and stable policy environment, and has since gathered huge support from Kiwi individuals and organisations.
At the time, Shaw said: “Insurance companies and banks are re-thinking their risk profiles and premiums for coastal homes and businesses. But the cost to the economy and our way of life is much greater than just the insurance claims.”
Now, Seymour claims the average household could be $10,000 a year poorer as a result of the bill.
“In order to have a proper debate on this issue, the government needs to be completely transparent with New Zealanders about the costs and benefits of its Zero Carbon Bill,” Seymour added.
“Kiwis footing the bill deserve no less than complete transparency on this issue.”
